Video: Oskar Schlemmer and his „Lackballett“

An audio-visual introduction to Oskar Schlemmer’s last stage work “Das Lackballett”, which he created and performed once in 1941 on the occasion of a celebration of the Farbwerke Herberz in Wuppertal. The video podcast introduces his work in the 1930s/40s and puts this information in context with the re-creation of “The Lacquer Ballet” in 2019 by the Düsseldorf Theater der Klänge. (in German with English subtitles)

THEATER DER KLÄNGE bauhausbühne
In February 2023 we documented on film a series of rehearsals for recasting rehearsals of three Bauhaus ballets:
The Mechanical Ballet, TRIAS – The Triadic Ballet and The Lacquer Ballet. In a montage of historical materials, interviews, rehearsal sequences in the rehearsal studio of the Düsseldorf THEATER DER KLÄNGE and performance recordings of these three ballets, it becomes clear what the originals of the 1920s to 1940s were and meant, how and why an appropriation by the THEATER DER KLÄNGE has taken place since the 1980s and to what extent these approaches have been continued in a contemporary way.

Palimpsest: The cultural heritage of folk dance and music
At the end of February, THEATER DER KLÄNGE in Düsseldorf offered a Dance Sprint workshop on the theme of “Folk Dance as Material for Contemporary Dance“.
A small group of dancers learned traditional dances from the German regions of Rhineland & Westphalia in one day from an expert dance teacher.
The ensemble used the learned dances as material for contemporary dance improvisations, from which three short choreographies were developed by choreographer Jacqueline Fischer on the last day and presented in a “Meet the Artist” salon in the rehearsal studio of THEATER DER KLÄNGE. A montage of interviews and rehearsal sequences in the rehearsal studio of THEATER DER KLÄNGE in Düsseldorf as well as recordings of the final presentation of these three dances introduces the subject of “folk dance as cultural heritage”.
